NEF-oh-man-see · n. divination by clouds
The sky has been trying to tell you something for thousands of years.
Point your phone upwards, snap a cloud, and get a reading made for you. Tarot, but with more weather.
A horoscope only knows your birthday. Nephomancy reads the actual sky above you, and no two skies are ever alike.
Horoscopes change with your birth date. Yours changes with your sky. Every cloud is one of a kind, and so is every reading.
Your brain is brilliant at finding faces and shapes in clouds (it's called pareidolia). Ambiguous shapes tend to mirror what's already on your mind, so a reading is a prompt to pause and think. For entertainment and reflection only.
People have looked to the sky for signs for thousands of years. There's no single official rulebook for reading clouds, so we wrote ours with a respectful nod to the old ways.
Nothing to shuffle and nothing to look up. All you need is a phone and a sky, even a grey one. Especially a grey one, they're full of character.
Find a sky you feel something about. Dramatic is good. Fluffy is fine.
Take a photo. Our oracle studies the shapes, the light and the mood.
A reading written just for you, about your path, your week, your big questions.
Long before weather apps, people looked up and wondered what it all meant. A few of our favourite moments from the story:
Mesopotamia · the Babylonian era onward
Scribes compiled Enūma Anu Enlil, a series of around 70 tablets and roughly 7,000 omens about the moon, sun, planets and weather. Storms and skies were messages for kings.
China · Dunhuang manuscripts
A manuscript called Zhan yunqi shu ("Cloud Divination") sets cloud-watching within China's long tradition of reading auspicious and ominous signs.
Late antiquity · 5th century CE
The philosopher Damascius tells of a woman in Cilicia who prayed toward the sun and watched a cloud take the shape of a man, then a cloud-lion swallow it. It was read as an omen about a general.
These are friendly summaries of the history, and the real story is wonderfully messy. We're enthusiasts, not academics.
Be first in line when Nephomancy opens. We'll send one email when it's ready, and none of the other stuff.
